ZamboSur gov't to plant cacao, coffee in 10,000 hectares of land
By Gideon C. Corgue
PAGADIAN CITY, February 17--- The
provincial government of Zamboanga del Sur is targeting to plant cocoa and
coffee of 10,000 hectares of land to earn an income of P100,000 per hectare per
year and also generate an income of P1-B for the province.
Governor Victor Yu in his message
during the 4th Cacao Festival held at the provincial covered court, said that
when he was the congressman of the first District, it was his vision that the
province would become rich in the year 2025 by planting and cultivating cacao
and coffee seedlings.
The governor reported that
currently there are only more than 1,500 hectares of cacao and one (1) thousand
hectares of coffee planted by farmers in the province.
Yu observed that it is not easy for the farmers to plant cacao and coffee seedlings because of the challenges faced by the farmers, so they have not been able to plant cacao and coffee within 10,000 hectares of the farm.
Because of this situation, Yu
ordered the agriculture's office to make a catch up plan so that the farmers
can finish planting cacao and coffee.
The good governor said that the
lack of land to grow cacao and coffee is one of the contributory factors why
the provincial government has not yet achieved his vision for the farmers.
Yu is optimistic that the
planting will be completed in 2030 instead of 2025 and to achieve his vision
that the province will become rich in 2030 by planting cacao and coffee.
Cacao and coffee are considered by the
provincial government to be the important economic development engine in the
province. (jcc/The Pagadian Times)
