PNP, traditional media, social media handlers, press corps forge united stand against fake news

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Aug. 1 — In order to combat the spread of fake news, the Police RegionaL Office (PRO-9), traditional media, social media handlers, and PNP Press Corps Officers gathered on Friday to attend the Anti-Fake News Consultative Forum  at Camp Col. Romeo Abendan here.



LtCol. Francisco Calumba, jr., the officer-in-charge of the Regional Community Affairs and Development Division (RCADD) that in this digital era where internet and social media become part of our daily routines, access to information is faster in more ways than even before. "

He said that this demonstrates how technology has become an integral part of modern life, providing instant access to information and opportunities for growth and connection.


"But with this convenience, Calumba said it comes with a great responsibility especially f
or us the law enforcement to protect the integrity of the importance of information shared online saying that the information shared without verification and treated as truth is misleading, exaggerated, and false.

Calumba added that as public servants and peacekeepers they have a crucial role not only in upholding law and order but also in combating the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation effectively.

Calumba added that the purpose of the forum is to deepen their understanding of the current information landscape, to sharpen their strategies and to forge a united stand against digital deception.



He urged the participants to be united in promoting truth, accountability and responsible communication.

"Together let us promote truth, accountability, and responsible communication ensuring that every post report and message is accurate and meaningful," Calumba concluded.

PR0-9 also invited their partner-agencies as resource speakers: Philippine Information Agency (PIA-9) discussed the topic "Understanding Disinformation, Misinformation, and Malinformation/Media information Literacy"; DICT-IX - “National Landscape on Disinformation, Misinformation, Malinformation, Fake news, and the Resiliency of Public Security”; ABS-CBN - "Journalism Ethics/Ethical Information Sharing; and Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 9 -"Challenges in Cyber Crime Investigation."(jcc/kbp-zamboanga del sur )
