ZSPPO conducts monitoring fuel stations to prevent hoarding, illegal price manipulation

By Gideon C. Corgue

PAGADIAN CITY, March 22  —The Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office (ZSPPO) is conducting daily monitoring of the fuel prices and gasoline station operations in the province.

Thus disclosed P/LtCol. Christopher Menodoza, the Deputy Provincial Director for Police Operations during a press conference held at the Governors’ Office recently.

Mendoza said that the daily, intensified monitoring of gasoline stations province-wide is being conducted by the ZSPPO in partnership with the provincial, city and municipal governments, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to prevent illegal price manipulation, hoarding, and unreasonable price increases by owners of gasoline stations.

Mendoza added that this initiative was made by ZSPPO on February 28 as an immediate action to rising fuel prices caused by tensions in the Middle East, aimed at protecting consumers.

He added that during their daily monitoring, they have inspected 592 gasoline stations in the province, however, they learned that the sharp increase in fuel prices at gasoline stations is generally regarded as  reasonable fluctuation.

The PNP officer asserted that the “fuel situation in the province is under control”.

When asked by Governor Divina Grace Yu ,how the government officials would know if there is over-pricing, Mendoza replied that their office does not have the authority to decide if there is over-pricing at gas stations because it is the job of the DOE and they are only responsible for monitoring of prices.

According to recent findings, no confirmed cases of widespread profiteering or illegal price manipulation have been officially reported, but the surveillance remains firm.

The PNP will continue to monitor until fuel prices return to normal.(jcc/KBP-Zamboanga del Sur )
