Suspension of quarry operations in the town of Labangan greatly affect the implementation of infra projects, says Gov.Yu
By Gideon C. Corgue
PAGADIAN CITY, October 22 – The suspension of quarry
operations in the town of Labangan will significantly affect the implementation
of infrastructure projects in the province.
This is the reaction of Governor Victor Yu to the
statement of Labangan Mayor Eddie Relacion during the press conference held
recently.
It can be recalled that Relacion made his pronouncement during an interview with the local media that he stopped the large-scale quarrying operation in Labangan because it will destroy the environment.
Yu said that if the quarrying operation is stopped, where
will the people who make improvements to their houses buy sand and gravel?
Yu added, people can buy sand and gravel in the
neighboring towns of Bayog, Dumingag, Mahayag and Tigbao but it is too far away
and the price is too expensive.
The governor also said that most of the quarry permittees
went to his office but he could not issue a permit because the mayor would not
issue them a business permit.
"Relacion will not issue a business permit to those
who applied for a quarry permit because he wants to control everything. He
wants to be the only one to sell sand and gravel in Labangan," the
governor said.
He added that those engaged in quarry business usually
have business permits, but these were revoked by the mayor.
Meanwhile, while the governor admitted that it is true
that there is a name of his brother and the engineer who engaged in the quarry
business because it was part of their family's construction business for a long
time before he was a congressman and governor. "For me, it is necessary
for them to apply so that they also have a source of income," he
explained.
He also disclosed that not only the Yu family is engaged
in the quarry business but also Mayor Relacion himself.
"I'll just clarify the 'dummy' issue he said, who is
Susan Relacion? There are even Toto Dy, Nelly Lim, and Lourdes Poscalbo who are
engaged in that business in Labangan?, Yu concluded.
The governor also urged those engaged in the quarry business to apply for a business permit to go to Labangan and if they are not issued a business permit, the “mayor will violate the law.” (jcc/Pagadian Times)
