LAKEWOOD, Zamboanga del Sur,
Sept. 4- The Rotary Club of Pagadian West donated Subanen musical instruments
to the officers of the Indigenous People Structure (IPS) in the town of
Lakewood during the launching ceremony of the School of Living Tradition (SLT),
phase 1 at Phusaha Hall in barangay Poblacion recently.
Aldrik Mirrar, the president of the Rotary Club of Pagadian West (RCPW) handed over the Subanen musical instruments to Dlibon Timuay Anita Tumbao and Nilda Mangilay and was witnessed by Oliver Tumbao, the Indigenous People Member Representative (IPMR) of the town.
Mirar said that the musical
instruments were donated by RCPW to be used by 21 Subanen youths in learning
Subanen traditional dances and songs while they were attending SLT for 36 days.
Mirar added that their
organization supports the SLT because people have observed that many Subanen
children now do not know how to pronounce their own language and sing and dance
their traditional songs and dances and play Subanen musical instruments,
something they are very concerned about.
Tumbao and Mangilay who are
SLT volunteer teachers, are very happy that RCPW donated musical instruments to
SLT because through this, they will be encouraged to teach the children to
preserve the Subanen culture in Lakewood.
Tumbao added that under SLT (Phase 1), classes will be
held for Subanen children every Saturday.
In a similar development, Rotary Club past president Julito Timtim also handed over cash to the IPS officers so that they could buy more musical instruments for the SLT.
Timtim also admired the
talent of the children who danced the Subanen dance gracefully and the cultural
masters who played the musical instruments fantastically during the SLT
launching ceremony.
The IPS also expressed their
gratitude to the barangay council of Baking under the leadership of Punong
Barangay Rolando Langas for the support they provided to SLT by providing free
food to the learners for the entire duration of the class.
Apart from the musical
instruments, the RCPW also gave free school supplies to the Subanen learners so
that they can use them in their schooling in SLT. (jcc/The Pagadian Times)
