By Gideon C. Corgue

LAKEWOOD, Zamboanga del Sur, September 13- After several months of having no Indigenous People (IP) representative in the Lakewood Municipal Council, Oliver Tumbao was officially installed by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) as the new IPMR on September 11.

Julius Mabini, the provincial officer of NCIP who brought the copy of the certificate of affirmation (COA) issued by their office and personally handed it to Vice Mayor Ronaldo Looc during the regular session of the Sangguniang Bayan officials.

Looc said that they expect the COA to be given by the NCIP in their office because this is their legal basis for approval for the additional ex-officio member of the local sanggunian that represents the Indigenous People (IP).

The Sangguniang Bayan immediately passed a resolution recognizing and accepting Tumbao as the IP representative of Lakewood.

Tumbao took the oath of office before Mayor Domingo Mirar and was witnessed by provincial officer Mabini, Vice Mayor Looc, Sannguniang Bayan officials, and tribal leaders.

Mirar said that the municipal government is confident that Tumbao will continue to build upon the solid foundation laid by his predecessors, and carry forward the torch of leadership in IP with utmost responsibility and integrity.

Tumbao said that when he sits as an ex-officio member, he will support the advocacy and programs of the Sangguniang Bayan, especially the promotion of the rights of the IP community.

He added that he will also implement the ancestral domain management office (ADMO) of the Indigenous People Structure (IPS) which is responsible for the identification, delineation and recognition of ancestral lands/domains so that IPs can have sustainable growth and development in Lakewood.
