PAGADIAN CITY, September 15- The role of the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC) is very vital in the implementation of the 'Buhay Ingatan, Droga'y Ayawan' or BIDA program of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Thus, disclosed Atty. Benjamin Abalos, Jr., the DILG secretary before the local chief executives of the province, city, municipality and barangay during the Local Government Unit (LGU) Day on September 14 at the Mega gym, barangay Dao here.

Abalos, the event’s guest of honor and speaker said that the fight against illegal drugs is not only the responsibility of the national government or the Philippine National Police (PNP) but it is also the responsibility of the local government units (LGUs), the Barangay Anti-Drug Councils. (BADACs), local institutions, churches, and civil society organizations (COs).

Abalos said that through BADAC, anyone who uses and sells illegal drugs can easily be known by the Punong Barangay and Bantay Bayan.

Abalos added that in the BIDA program, the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Philippine Army, local chief executives-governors, city and municipal mayors, board members, barangay captains, community and religious leaders are united to eliminate illegal drugs.

The good Secretary announced that the problem of illegal drugs in the country is very serious where he pointed out the data that the cases filed in court and all those currently in prison, 70% are related to illegal drugs.

Due to this alarming situation, Abalos urged the local government units to support the BIDA program so that illegal drugs can be eliminated in the country.

He said that if the police did not respond or did nothing to the complaint, he urged them to report it to him by calling his mobile phone that he gave to the municipal mayors.

"I will use the power of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) to take action against erring police officers who do not act on the report of the concerned citizen," Abalos warned.

During the event, the DILG recognized and honored the outstanding achievements and exemplary efforts of the LGUs in various governance areas. The signing of the pledge of commitment led by Abalos was also held with the local chief executives. (jcc/The Pagadian Times)
