Mayor Co urges public to be vigilant during Fire Prevention Month

 By Gideon C. Corgue

PAGADIAN CITY, March 12--- Pagadian City Mayor Samuel Co urged the public to be more vigilant in implementing fire safety protocols to prevent property damage and loss of life.

In the Mayor's report program, Co said that the city government has been urging the people to be vigilant because the whole country observes the month of March as Fire Prevention Month where usually in this month, there are fire incidents reported to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

"Every month of March, the weather is very hot and the plants are also very dry which is why the fire spreads very easily. If a person lights a fire, he should extinguish it by immediately pouring water," Co advised.

Co also mentioned the 'kaingin system' of farming where the farmer cuts, burns and clears the forest and if he does not control the fire it will spread rapidly which will result in the destruction of the plants and the burning of houses.

He also admonished the residents of the city to always be cautious and if they cook in the kitchen, they should not leave what they are cooking to prevent their house from burning.

The mayor advised people who are planning to expand their homes that they need to hire an electrician to check the plug and for the electrician to recommend how many appliances should be placed in the outlet to avoid fire incidents.

Co hopes that in the observance of Fire Prevention Month, there will be no fire incidents that occur in the city and that the BFP will conduct public massive information and awareness to fight fire and how everyone in the community can work together to prevent fire tragedies from happening.

The month of March was declared by former President Ferdinand Marcos through Proclamation No. 115-A and Proclamation No. 360 in 1986 "Fire Prevention Month" throughout the country. (jcc/KBP-Zamboanga del Sur)
