LABANGAN, Zamboanga del Sur,
March 21—About forty three thousand two hundred (43,200cc) of blood was
collected from 96 altruistic volunteer blood donors in the recent bloodletting
activity conducted by the 1st Cavalry Battalion, Armor Division, Philippine
Army, in partnership with the Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC) at Camp Colonel
Jacobo Zobel in barangay Pulacan here.
LtCol. John Mark Competente, the commanding officer said that the activity which carries the theme: "Dugo Ko, Sagip Buhay Mo" is part of the series of activities in connection with the upcoming 49th Founding Anniversary of the unit on April 2023.
"I am grateful that the
unit has conducted a bloodletting activity after couple of years of not
conducting the activity due to the strict COVID-19 health restrictions
implemented by the government," Competente happily announced.
Competente warmly thanked
the various stakeholders who voluntarily donated their blood because it helps a
lot in saving human lives.
Rodrigo Rodriguez, the blood
bank coordinator of APMC in Marawi city said that their hospital partnered with
the 1st Cavalry Battalion to conduct bloodletting activity in their unit
because Marawi is surrounded by the 103rd brigade and it is under the area of
jurisdiction of the 1st Infantry Division, Philippine Army.
He added that the ambulance of Zamboanga del Sur goes to APMC almost every day and brings patients for treatment. "Because of this, they will also benefit from the blood we collected from volunteer donors where the blood will be stored at APMC," Rodriguez explained.
"Patients waiting for blood are children and the
elderly who have diseases such as cancer, kidney failure, pregnant women
undergoing cesarean section, etc,” Rodriguez said.
He said that first priority to receive the blood is the soldiers of the 1st Cavalry Battalion who voluntarily donated the blood.
Meanwhile, Juvy Bariuan, the president of the Women's Association of Upper Pulacan, Labangan volunteered to donate blood because she wanted to help people who are in dire need of blood.
She said that it was the
first time she donated blood and it was inevitable for her to feel the fear of
having the blood drawn from her body but this gradually disappeared because her
motivation to help her fellow man prevailed.
Bariuan encouraged her
fellow women to donate blood during their celebration of Women's Month this
March so that they can help save lives.(jcc/KBP-Zamboanga del Sur)
